Birch Bay fire
Monday, June 1, 2026 (mid-afternoon, around 2:56–3 p.m.).
The Birch Bay Fire (also referred to in some updates as near Burntside Lake) was first detected on the afternoon of Monday, June 1, 2026, approximately ½ mile west of Lindskog Road/North Arm Road, west of the North Arm of Burntside Lake, about 8 miles northwest of Ely in St. Louis County, Minnesota (on the Superior National Forest).
It started small (initially reported around a few acres) and grew to 30–35 acres within the first day or so, prompting evacuations. The cause remains under investigation.
